Auto techs in hot demand

A few articles in this week’s Open Road spotlight the growing auto technician shortage (see related articles in the News section). In fact, the shortage is becoming so critical that at the 2019 NADA Show, the NADA Foundation announced an auto technician initiative to address the situation (see article below).

If you’re feeling the pain too, and want to fill the open slots you have, the Automotive Career Fair at the Denver Auto Show will be one of your best opportunities to talk with students all year. Last Thursday, we reached out to all schools with auto tech programs — that includes technical colleges AND high schools — to encourage student registration. So far, we’ve had a response from one school that will send more students than we had in attendance in two days last year!

Bottom line: We’re expecting hundreds of students who will have preregistered for the career fair. And if you have a table at on the Denver Auto Show floor, you’ll receive a full list of all those who attend the event. And that includes what the focus of their studies is, their contact info, when they’re slated to graduate, really, all kinds of information you’ll find useful, practical and valuable.

But that’s only if you’re at the Automotive Career Fair, too. As you can imagine, spaces are filling up at a pretty good clip. If you have empty positions to fill, please join us at the Automotive Career Fair at the Denver Auto Show 2-7 p.m. Friday, March 29 and 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, March 30.

Guest Commentary: Emission standards will put Colorado drivers in the ditch

A fundamentally-American freedom is under attack.

The automobile defined the 20th Century in the United States. Mass production made cars available to the nation’s middle class and helped create the modern suburb, where most Americans now live.

Driving became part of coming of age in America. Road trips allowed Americans to affordably explore their nation, including its stunning parks and other natural wonders.

Over time, constant innovation has made automobiles safer, greener and more fuel efficient. Even as Americans have driven more miles, air pollution has declined.

Today’s vehicles are as varied as Americans themselves; there’s one to fit every need and personality.

It’s no wonder people become attached to their car like no other product, often giving it an affectionate name and customizing it with creative accoutrements.

Getting behind the wheel is associated with freedom and adventure — generations of songs extol this exhilarating feeling.

But human-created obstacles are quickly approaching on the road ahead.
