Dealers respond to the call to oppose direct-to-consumer vehicle sales bill hearing
Senate Bill 167 was introduced to the Colorado State Legislature Thursday, February 13. While we were expecting another ‘Rivian-type’ bill to be introduced in another form, the bill attacks the very premise of franchised car dealerships in that it allows manufacturers to directly sell electric vehicles to consumers — and therefore pits your suppliers against your dealership(s).
During our Colorado Dealer Breakfast Sunday at the NADA Show, Senator Rhonda Fields emphasized the importance of a big group of dealers physically showing up at the state capitol to oppose the bill. She said that the other side — primarily the Colorado Energy Office-formed coalition of EV advocates — will be strong (120 or more people); it wouldn’t bode well for us to show up with just five dealers.
With that in mind, I reached out to all dealers and we had upwards of 135 people show up to the Capitol, opposing SB-167. (One dealer brought 50 people.) To dealers who took time from your busy day to oppose this bill at the Capitol and protect your livelihood, I thank you. None of the progress we made there today was possible without your being there.
